MKA Boys Season In Review

Following a very successful 2016 season, the MKA boys soccer team went in to the 2017 season with high expectations, but a very tough schedule in the uber competitive SEC American Division. In early season play the MKA team made a statement with victories over perennial power houses East Side Newark (5-1), Livingston (3-2), and West Essex (2-1). Other victories in league play were Bloomfield (3-2), Newark Academy (2-0) and Caldwell (2-1), leaving the Cougars with a 6-4-2 record in conference and cross over play.

Heading in to tournament play the Cougars were seeded number 5 in the Essex County Tournament, number 1 in the Prep B Tournament and number 3 in the NJSIAA Non Public B North State Section. The cougars fell short in the Essex County Tournament, losing 3-0 to West Orange. Success followed however in the Prep B tournament, where the MKA boys won a thrilling final, 2-1, against a very strong Gill St. Bernards team. Following a 3-0 victory over Hawthorne Christian in the NJSIAA Non Public B North Section Semi Final the Cougars faced Morris Catholic in the final. In an incredibly close and competitive encounter the cougars season ended with a 1-0 loss. In all though the season was a huge success with MKA being competitive in conference play, winning its first prep title since 2011, and being one game short of adding its first state title in six years. All this whilst still continuing to blood younger players. The cougars will look to continue to develop its status as one of the leading Non Public soccer programs in the state.
